1957: USSR launches Sputnik; in response US establishes ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency)
1965: first two computers linked via 1200bps phone line
1970: first cross-country link at 56kbps
1971: 15 nodes, first e-mail program invented
1973: RFC 318 (Telnet specification)
1974: TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) specification
1976: Queen Elizabeth II sends out her first e-mail, UUCP developed and distributed with UNIX one year later
1978: TCP split into TCP and IP
1979: USENET established, first MUD, first emoticons; first talks about NFSnet
1981: BITNET (“Because It’s Time NETwork”), CSNET
