I was born in Hertfordshire, took a degree in Natural Sciences (Genetics) in Cambridge then moved to Scotland for 7 years to work on the cell cycle on fission yeast, first at the Institute of Cell and Molecular Biology of Edinburgh University (where I was awarded my Ph.D.), and then at the MRC's Human Genetics Unit.
Subsequently, I moved to York and studied for an M.Sc. in Biological Computation. I completed a project on Natural Language Processing with Glaxo-Wellcome in Stevenage before joining the SWISS-PROT team as a database programmer in October 1999. My work here has centered to date on the processing of data: exploiting information present in SWISS-PROT records to add value to the database, and identifying and integrating non-redundant data obtained from external sources.
Unfortunately, Cambridge has not got any more mountainous since I last lived here, which makes hillwalking, my favourite pastime, tricky though not completely impossible... when I can't get away, I spend my time writing extremely bad fiction.
