His basic degree is in chemical engineering, with a thesis in the Genetics Department at the University of Ghent (UoG). After he worked as a technician for 4 years at the EMBL in Heidelberg and in Plant Genetic Systems, Ghent, he went 'back to school' to obtain a PhD in Microbiology at the University of CapeTown. This was followed by a post-doc position at Tufts Medical School, a team-leader position in the Department of Microbiology (UoG), and a Glaxo-Wellcome Fellowship at the Rega Institute, Catholic University of Leuven.
Paul is currently involved in the new GeneQuiz system. His other interests include microbial evolution and adaptation, lateral genetransfer, and whole-genome comparisons.
