The Industry Programme of the European Bioinformatics Institute
In 1996, the European Bioinformatics Institute launched a programme of support for industry in the field of bioinformatics. The aim of this programme is to help the pharmaceutical and biotech industries to benefit from the latest innovations in the fast-growing field of bioinformatics by providing training, plus pre-competitive research and development. To remain current, the project content is developed jointly by the EBI and its industry partners during quarterly meetings held at the EBI.
The seventeen current members of the EBI Industry Programme are:
|
Akzo Nobel |
Novartis Pharma |
|
AstraZeneca |
Novo Nordisk |
|
Aventis |
Pfizer |
|
Boehringer-Ingelheim |
Pharmacia and Upjohn |
|
British Biotechnology |
Schering |
|
Glaxo Wellcome |
SmithKline Beecham |
|
Hoffmann-La Roche |
Synthelabo |
|
Janssen |
Unilever |
|
Merck KGaA |
|
|
There are five main activities in the Industry Programme:
- Training and education
- Members have access to the training and education courses run by the Industry Programme. These courses are available to members only. Since 1996, over 40 workshops and conferences have been organised.
- Research - Within the group, pre-competitive research and evaluation in bioinformatics is done, e.g. data mining, visualisation, CORBA, XML, DNA microarrays and gene prediction. Members have influence over the direction of research and access to preliminary results.
- Development - In collaboration with other groups at the EBI, we strive to improve EBI resources as requested by our members, e.g. access to public EST data.
- Standards - Of interest to our members is the development of standards that will prevent them becoming locked into proprietary solutions. As a neutral organisation, the EBI has been involved with the promotion of standards for biomolecular sequence analysis, genomic maps and DNA microarray data.
- Industry programme meetings - Each quarter we organise a 1½ day for our members. This is not only for discussion of project progress and development, but provides an opportunity for scientists and managers in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry to discuss issues informally and network on a neutral territory.
