Bioinformatics initiatives, software and databases

The Bio-Eye section of the "BioInformer" aims to keep you informed of new initiatives and technologies as well as the more "mundane" announcements of new software and database releases. These are not necessarily EMBL-EBI's, but news about the above topics is welcome from every person or organisation working in the field of bioinformatics.
You are welcome to send announcements to

Short News

Ensembl

The Wellcome Trust announced a major investment of £8.8 million over five years in the Ensembl project, the database providing automatic annotation of the human genome.

Databases (updates)

EMBL 63

The release contains in this release 6,760,113 sequence entries comprising 8,255,674,441 nucleotides. This represents an increase of about 282% over Release 59.

InterPro 1.2

InterPro is an integrated documentation resource for protein families, domains and sites, developed initially as a means of rationalising the complementary efforts of the PROSITE, PRINTS, Pfam and ProDom database projects. This release contains 3052 entries, representing 574 domains, 2418 families, 46 repeats, and 14 post-translational modification sites.

Pfam 5.4

Pfam is a collection of protein family alignments which were constructed semi-automatically using hidden Markov models (HMMs).  This release contains 2290 families and is based on SWISS_PROT 38 and SP-TREMBL 11 sequences.

RhDB 17

RHdb is a database of raw data used in constructing radiation hybrid maps. This includes STS data, scores, experimental conditions, and extensive cross references. This release (1 July 1999) contains 15 panel entries, 182 experimental conditions, 91 maps and 117639 RH entries (91376 different STS) for 5 different species (human, rat, mouse, zebrafish, and maize).

Software (updates)

W2H 3.2

A new release of the WWW interface to the GCG Sequence Analysis Software Package. W2H tries to cover as much functionality as possible, and to do it very user friendly . It gives you the opportunity to access more than  hundred programs from any platform where Netscape runs.
