I graduated in 1997 from the University of Darmstadt, Germany. I did Computer Science and as subsidiary subject biochemistry. In my 'Diplomarbeit' I used C++ and the modelling tool Insight II to optimise protein cores.
The next 2 years before I joined EBI, I worked at LION bioscience AG in Heidelberg. I was in charge of software development in the mapping department. I developed applications in Java, C, C++ and Tcl/Tk for picture analysis, experiment tracking, hybridisation data evaluation and map construction in a high throughput production environment. Also I programmed the Beckmann 2000 pipetting station and other laboratory equipment and I developed a pipetting tool based on a HC11 microcontroller for the reliable transferring of clones between 384 well plates.
In January 2000 I joined the Ensembl team. I developed the business object layer for the map-part of the database using perl. Integrating fingerprinting maps and improving the table layout of the databases will be my oncoming tasks.
