MRC Career opportunities in bioinformatics and neuroinformatics

The MRC offers a package of opportunities aimed at providing specialised multi-disciplinary research training that will help to create a research workforce able to take forward exciting new developments in the fields of bioinformatics and neuroinformatics.

Applications are invited for the following:

PhD Studentships

Applications are sought from academic departments, consortia or research divisions, Research Council establishments, Charity-funded Research Institutes and other approved academic analogues for Research and Collaborative Studentships.  Collaborative PhD training programmes that involve a period in an industrial laboratory or two academic collaborators will be welcome.  Requests for 3 year PhD studentships can also be linked with a bid for a studentship on a preliminary 1 year Masters course in a relevant area such as bioinformatics.

Each PhD Studentship award will comprise a tuition fee, a normal MRC student stipend, plus a recruitment premium of £2,000 per annum (in recognition of the special needs of the field), a Research Training Support Grant of £1,000 per annum, and Conference Travel Allowance of £300 per annum.

Advanced Course Studentships

Applications are also sought from academic departments, consortia or research divisions for studentships on advanced level courses at Masters level, in bioinformatics.  Requests may be for one year Advanced Course Studentships alone or linked with subsequent PhD Studentships.  If the application is for linked studentships the Masters course should be in a discipline relevant to the proposed PhD research projects.  Preference will be given to advanced level courses that offer a significant element of practical research experience as well as formal taught modules.

The closing date for receipt of applications for both types of Studentships is Friday, 15th October 1999.

Application packs and further information may be obtained from the Studentships Section, Research Career Awards, Medical Research Council, 20 Park Crescent, London W1N 4AL.  Tel: 071 636 5422 ext. 6133 (24 hour answering machine).

Details of the scheme can be discussed informally with Desmond Abbey (0171 636 5422 ext. 6403); queries may also be directed to bioinformatics@headoffice.mrc.ac.uk particularly regarding the areas of research covered by the scheme.

Special Training Fellowships

The MRC Special Training Fellowship in Bioinformatics provides specialist multidisciplinary research training at a doctoral or post-doctoral level.  Fellows may undertake a relevant Masters degree during the first part of the fellowship, followed by a period of specialist research training.  Award holders will be encouraged to register for a PhD (or MD) if they do not already have one.

The Fellowships are aimed at individuals from a variety of backgrounds: non-biological as well as biological, non-clinical as well as clinical, individuals with PhD/MD's or with informatics research training at a pre-doctoral level.  It is expected that all applicants will have at least some prior research experience.  Applications are particularly sought from those with advanced training in the physical or mathematical sciences or in information technology, who wish to apply their expertise to biological problems.

Science Graduates should hold either a PhD/DPhil in a relevant discipline or hold a research-oriented Masters degree and have undertaken a period (normally not less than three years) of appropriate postgraduate work.

Medical and dental applicants should normally be immediate post-registration up to Specialist Registrar grade or equivalent level in General Practice.  Nurses, midwives and researchers in the Professions Allied to Medicine must have completed their professional training and have a relevant research-oriented MSc.

Potential applicants who have relevant work experience but who do not meet the stated eligibility criteria are encouraged to contact us on bioinformatics@headoffice.mrc.ac.uk for further discussions on eligibility.

As part of the Council's Equal Opportunities policy, consideration will be given to applicants returning to science following a career break; part-time awards are available for all of Council's personal schemes and there are no age limits.

The closing date for receipt of applications for Special Training Fellowships in Bioinformatics is Wednesday, 13th October 1999.

Application packs are available on the MRC´s website. Packs are also available electronically and can be requested by e-mail: fellows@headoffice.mrc.ac.uk or telephone 020 7670 5393 (24 hour answering machine).

Details of the scheme may be discussed informally with Abigail Adjei (0171 636 5422 ext. 6409); queries may also be directed to bioinformatics@headoffice.mrc.ac.uk particularly regarding the areas of research covered by the scheme.
