To those that do not know me, here is some information about my academic background .
I have studied Chemistry for my first degree at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece with a diploma research project in the area of Food Chemistry.
From 1991 to 1992, I followed an M.Sc. course in Food and Agricultural Biotechnology at the University of Reading (UK). Research during my M.Sc. involved the correlation between protein electrophoretic analyses and chromatographic separation, as well as an investigation into the efficiency of different chromatographic techniques in separating model proteins.
In 1996, I received my Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering from the University of London. I worked at the Advanced Centre for Biochemical Engineering (University College London) and research focused mainly on the development of rapid immunochemical analyses for particulate proteins, namely virus-like particles, during their production and purification stages. I was also involved in characterising the flocculation and precipitation conditions to aid early protein purification processing.
Late 1996, I undertook a postdoctoral position at the National Technical University of Athens (Department of Chemical Engineering). This was a joint project between the Laboratories of Biosystems Technology and Food Technology, and I was responsible for the development of enzymatic time-temperature integrator systems to simulate modelled food shelf life behaviour for expiration date labelling.
In September 1998, I joined the EBI and the group of Christos Ouzounis. The project involves working under the TMR Programme on automated sequence analysis using GeneQuiz and applying new methods to incoming complete genome sequences.
