University of Cambridge

From 1993 to 1996 I studied for my undergraduate degree in Computer Science at the University of Cambridge, England, where I mostly took the more theoretical courses. Around that time I worked generally as a freelance computer consultant and spent a few months as a research assistant writing software for the university's Engineering Design Centre. I may be a supervisor for some computer science courses at the university for the coming academic year (1998/99).

The Ohio State University

After graduating from Cambridge, I became a Visiting Scholar in the Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence Research at the Ohio State University (OSU) where I worked on the design and implementation of software for evaluating hybrid vehicle designs using the distributed computing techniques afforded by Modula-3; we now have a patent pending for the architecture used by the software. I moved on to develop software for dynamically creating design evaluators (not only in the vehicle domain) using libraries of composable parts in conjunction with a goal-directed simulation system.

The Present - European Bioinformatics Institute

Since August 1998 I have been working at the EBI under Christos Ouzounis. This should allow me to make use of my artificial intelligence skills and my experience in performing complex CPU-intensive operations on large amount of data, while giving me an opportunity to learn a lot about molecular biology and the leading edge of bioinformatics.

Independent Work

Outside of my work for the EBI, my research interests include:

  • Algorithmic design and analysis of block ciphers and key exchange protocols
  • Strongly typed flow-based or data-driven declarative programming languages
  • Use of associative memories for hypothesis generation
  • Automated composition of music

I intend to earn an external PhD from the University of Cambridge and to become a member of the British Computer Society and a Chartered Engineer. I have experience of setting up and managing computer systems (mostly flavours of UNIX) and on our network at home I run Debian Linux. I remain a consultant for OSU, and am also a director of Asquith Burton Ltd which develops payroll software for small businesses.
