Title |
Second Annual Human Genome Project -- Europe |
Organiser |
Cambridge Healthtech Institute, USA |
Date |
4 - 6 May 1998 |
Venue |
Cannes, France |
Details |
The need for turning sequence data being generated from the Human Genome Project into information is increasing. Genomics will change to way medicine is practiced as information about how genes function and how specific genetic profiles can be indicators of therapeutic prescription and disease outcome is realized. Efforts are being made to isolate disease genes and develop diagnostic tests and therapeutic markers. Databases of genomic information are proving essential to expediting the drug discovery process. Informatics is a key tool for making use of the vast amount of sequence information. Techniques for studying genes in a high throughput manner will be covered, along with the consequent applications. Advances in the fields of pharmacogenomics, molecular diagnostics, and proteomics will be discussed as they enhance our understanding of human genetics. |

Genome Mapping, Sequencing & Biology |
Organiser |
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor, NY, USA |
Date |
13 - 17 May 1998 |
Venue |
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory |
Details |
The past ten years have seen remarkable progress in the mapping and sequencing of the genomes of many model organisms and there is now strong confidence that the human genome sequence is an attainable goal. Phrases such as functional genomics and post-genome biology have become common terms. In the light of this emerging shift of emphasis, the new organizers have chosen to modify the name of the annual Cold Spring Harbor Genome Mapping & Sequencing meeting to reflect these changes. The 1998 meeting will address topics including human genome sequencing, biological insights from multi-organismal genomics, human genetics and biology, computational genomics, genome methodologies, gene discovery and transcript mapping, comparative mapping and sequencing, genomic diversity & variation, and molecular evolution. Interactive demonstrations of genomic computational tools and databases will again form part of the program. |

Sixth International Conference on Intelligent Systems in Molecular Biology (ISMB'98) |
Organiser |
International Society for Computational Biology |
Date |
28 June - 1 July 1998 |
Venue |
Radisson Hotel des Gouverneurs, Montréal, Québec, Canada |
Details |
The ISMB conference provides a general forum for disseminating the latest developments in bioinformatics. ISMB is a multidisciplinary conference that brings together scientists from computer science, molecular biology, mathematics and statistics. Its scope includes the development and application of advanced computational methods for biological problems. Relevant computational techniques include, but are not limited to: machine learning, pattern recognition, knowledge representation, databases, combinatorics, stochastic modeling, string and graph algorithms, linguistic methods, robotics, constraint satisfaction, and parallel computation. Biological areas of interest include molecular structure, genomics, molecular sequence analysis, evolution and phylogenetics, metabolic pathways, regulatory networks, developmental control, and molecular biology generally. Emphasis is placed on the validation of methods using real data sets, on practical applications in the biological sciences, and on development of novel computational techniques |
