EBI Launches Industry Affiliates Programme

The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) has launched a new initiative of industry support in the field of bioinformatics. The Industry Affiliates Initiative is specifically designed to benefit small-to-medium enterprises in the biotechnology industry. Through this initiative, the EBI helps affiliate partners recognise and adopt new technologies in bioinformatics and computational molecular biology, making them more competitive in today's marketplace.

The EBI builds and distributes databases of information relevant to biological research, and conducts research in computational molecular biology. In collaboration with others, it maintains the largest collection of biological databases in the world. The EBI serves industry as well as academia, and is active in a number of industry-directed research and development efforts which are particularly important to the biotechnology industry. These include distributed object-oriented database technology, data mining and visualisation, and high performance computing in computational molecular biology. As part of these efforts, the EBI organises frequent workshops, conferences and specialised courses.

For a modest annual subscription, affiliate partners benefit from the EBI's technology tracking and transfer activities. In addition, they gain access to more of the EBI's WWW pages than are publicly available, and receive preferential rates for workshops, conferences and training courses.

The Industry Affiliates Initiative builds on the success of other activities in the Industry Support Programme at the EBI. One is the BioStandards project, jointly funded by the EBI, the EU and the pharmaceutical industry. Another is the BIOTITAN Technology Transfer Node at the EBI. BIOTITAN is a member of the HPCN TTN Network, the EU-funded ESPRIT project in High Performance Computing and Networking.
