A new sprout in the Industry Support programme: BioTitan
In the second quarter of this year we hope to start a new project under the umbrella of the Industry Support programme. This is BioTitan, the acronym for the TTN (Technology Transfer Node) which the EBI has formed in partnership with two other computer centres, UNI-C in Denmark and CASPUR in Italy.
It will be funded by the European Commission under the preparatory, support and transfer (PST) activities which form part of the Esprit high performance computing and networks (HPCN) programme of the EU. A TTN's main role is to act as an intermediate between end-users, technology providers and HPCN experts by co-ordinating industrially focused activities and disseminating the results.
There are twenty EC - funded TTNs throughout Europe, but BioTitan is the only one whose primary focus is bioinformatics.
As part of the PST activities there is a continuous call for associated actions to be clustered with the TTN. So far, two associated projects have been approved by the EC:
- BIOVIS
A project in partnership with a small UK-based software company (Quadstone) to modify some existing visualisation software and demonstrate its applicability to the data mining of biological databases.
- CEBUS
A project co-ordinated by UNI-C in partnership with DIAS (the Danish Institute of Animal Science) to demonstrate the use of high performance parallel computing to analyse breeding traits in individual animals.
